Ryan Howard Extends Stay in Philadelphia

Left-handed slugger Ryan Howard has agreed to stay with the Philadelphia Phillies until 2017, signing a five-year contract extension worth $125 million. Howard’s current contract will expire in two years.

Howard, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, said extending his stay with the Phillies was an easy decision, as it was Philadelphia that gave him the chance to get into the Major League Baseball. General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the decision to re-sign Howard this early was proof of how important the 2006 NL MVP is to the Phillies.

“We just felt it was good timing for us…we decided he is that important to our organization and to our club and to our future,” Amaro said, after joking that Howard “has agreed to buy a second home for me” as part of the deal.

Howard has helped the Phillies reach the last two World Series. The Phillies won in 2008 against the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-1, but lost, 2-4, to the New York Yankees last season.

UEFA Champions League: Olympique Lyon vs. Bayern Munich

Olympique Lyonnais, appearing in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time, are the underdogs as they face four-time champions Bayern Munich  (Munchen) tonight at Stade Gerland. However, Lyon boss Claude Puel has stated his side will execute a more attacking approach in the second leg against the German side to advance to the final on May 22.

Bayern, conquerors of Manchester United in the last 8, arrive in France with a slim lead thanks to their 1-0 victory at the Allianz Arena on April 21. An away goal most likely will push them to the final.

Louis van Gaal’s task is defending a slight advantage against an vehement squad without the services of suspended winger Franck Ribery and midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk, who is sick. In a recent interview, the 58-year-old Dutch tactician said: “We’ve got to forget about the first leg. This is a different game.”

The Bavarians could win titles on two other tournaments as they head the Bundesliga and have a date with Werder Bremen in the German Cup final, but winning Europe’s elite club competition is their primary goal.

Les Gones, on the other hand, have no suspension worries but midfielder Jean Makoun and defenders Jean-Alain Boumsong and Mathieu Bodmer are sidelined with injuries.

The game starts at 20:45 CET (2:45 p.m. ET). The FC Barcelona vs. Inter Milan match kicks-off tomorrow.

UPDATE: Ivica Olic scored a hat-trick as Bayern beat Lyon 3-0 (4-0 aggregate) to qualify for the Champions League final for the first time since they last won the competition in 2001.

Game 5: Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics Live Stream

Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics Live Stream Game 5: The Miami Heat survived a could be series ending Game 4 when they defeated the Boston Celtics 101-92 to force game 5.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade is the reason his team is still alive in the first-round best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series. He scored a franchise-record 46 points on Sunday against Boston. 19 of those 46 were fourth-quarter points while 16 of those 19 were from beyond the arc (4-for-4 shooting). Wade definitely pleased the crowd who watched his performance in American Airlines Arena.

“He’s done it before,” said Heat forward Michael Beasley, “but to do it in a playoff game against one of the best teams in the league…He’s a great player.”

“Coming into the fourth I think we were down six,” Wade said. “I was trying to be very aggressive. I was shooting all those shots no matter what. I started making a couple. I got hot at the right time. I just wanted to will my team to victory.”

Game 5 of the Heat vs. Celtics playoffs series will continue at TD Garden in Boston on Tuesday, April 27.

The game starts at 7:00 p.m. ET.

NHL Playoffs: Detroit Red Wings vs. Phoenix Coyotes (Game 7)

Red Wings vs. Coyotes Game 7 Live Stream: The Phoenix Coyotes, who are in the NHL Playoffs for the first time since 2002, defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Sunday to force a Game 7 in Glendale this evening. The winner will play the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Wings are not too much familiar to playing a Game 7 on the road and hasn’t won one since 1964. To make things even worse, of the 129 playoff series that have gone to a seventh game since the best-of-seven format was brought out in 1939, the home team has won 80 times.

Mike Babcock’s men technically are the underdogs since they are seeded fifth against the No. 4 Phoenix, but a lot of hockey fans think it would be an upset if the Wings lose. They have four Stanley Cups in the last 12 seasons for chrissake!

Dave Tippett’s side had a 29-10-2 record on home ice during the regular season, while Nicklas Lidstrom and co. were 19-14-8 on the road this year. With a win, the Coyotes would advance to the second round for the first time since moving from Winnipeg in 1996.

Meanwhile, captain Shane Doan once again will be a game-time decision. He has missed the past three matches but despite his absence, Phoenix has stretched its series with Detroit to seven games.

Who do you think will win? Let us know in the comments section below this post.

Prediction: I’m rooting for the Wings but I believe whoever scores first tonight will have a huge advantage.

The match kicks-off at 9:00 p.m. ET.

UPDATE: Detroit defeated Phoenix, 6-1, to advance to the Western Conference semifinals.
